Being a bit of
a tom-boy as a little girl, my friends and I would play cowboys and Indians.
The cowboys were armed with cap guns and the Indians were armed with bows
and arrows. The arrows were equipped with rubber suction cups on the tips so
no one would get hurt. However, one of those little arrows in the eye
smarted a bit.
Another game we played was a war game against enemy aircraft
(dragonflies) using a lethal broom to smite the "enemy". After
playing this
game for an hour or so, we had great remorse in our dastardly deed and gave
the dragonfly aircraft a decent burial. We found some small match boxes
for the coffins, dug small holes in the ground, covered the boxes with
dirt and placed a toothpick cross at the head of the "grave". We vowed never
to play this game ever again.
Unlike modern mystery crime games, these games were a hands-on experience, physical contact, and I don't know of any of these kids who turned into psychopathic killers.
Granted some of the more mature mystery crime games are graphically violent, but I believe if you have been brought up with any sense of right or wrong, you will simply say, "It ain't real. It's just a game." Besides, unlike our prehistoric ancestors, we no longer have to kill to survive. The survival instinct is still there, but because of our protective society, it has become somewhat neutralized which has lead to boredom. So, we law abiding, modern humans seek out adventure and thrills in other ways such as adventurous and thrilling mystery crime games.
One final word, too much aspirin can cause a bleeding ulcer. On the other hand, moderate doses of aspirin can help the heart. The same applies to video gaming. Too much of a good thing can be harmful and Mom/Dad you should be in control of what kind of and how much gaming your minor children are engaged in.
